Director’s Guild of American awards Jewison lifetime achievement award

Norman Jewison, the famed film director responsible for such great pictures as Fiddler on the Roof and Jesus Christ Superstar, will become the first Canadian to receive the lifetime achievement prize awarded by the Director’s Guild of America. It is a very high honor, as only 32 people have been given the same award since the Director’s Guild was created over seventy years ago.

Jewison started his directing career in television with the popular 1950s variety show, Your Hit Parade. He then went on to direct numerous films; however, his most well-received was The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming. This comedy, which arose out of the cold war tension of the day, garnered him much praise and almost earned him four Academy Awards back in 1966.

Since then, Jewison has been hard at work with no plans to retire even with his most recent recognition. Today, Jewison resides in Toronto, where he continues to promote the arts in education at a local university and helps aspiring film makers at the Canadian Film Centre.
